Biography
Alex is an Iredell County native who brings nearly a half-century of combined criminal justice, civilian and military courtroom experience to Harbinson Parker. He serves the firm in an Of Counsel capacity. His personal experience is vast and ranges from law enforcement (1972-1975), a Magistrate-Judge (1977-1989), a private attorney (1993-2012 and 2013-to present), a Superior Court Judge 2012-2013), a retired US Army JAG Officer (1988-2013) and a Commissioner for the NC Military and Veterans Affairs Commission, representing the 13th Congressional District of NC (2020-Present).
A 1993 graduate of North Carolina Central University-School of Law, Alex also holds a Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) degree from the University of South Carolina (1985). He obtained his BA in Criminal Justice from Pfeiffer College, in Misenheimer, NC (1980). He has also studied abroad at the University of London (1984). He was an adjunct faculty member at Mitchell Community College teaching in the BLET and Criminal Justice curriculums (1980-1983). A graduate of Statesville High School (1971). He also attended Oak Ridge Military Institute (1966-1968).
Alex is a decorated combat veteran of the Iraq War; he served in a Forward Operating Base (LSA Anaconda) in northern Iraq (2004-2005). He retired from the US Army in 2013. His military awards include the Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge (CAB), Legion of Merit and the NC Distinguish Service Medal and others. Alex has been sought out by countless Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard soldiers in all branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force and the Veterans of those branches, throughout his career. He rose through the ranks during his 31 years of active duty, reserve and national guard service from Private to Lieutenant Colonel, including 11 years as a Warrant Officer as the Legal Administrator for a Theatre Army Command JAG Office. He is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College (2010). From 1972-1975 he served in the Military Police Corps at Fort Liberty (Bragg) and in Europe. In 2008 he was selected to be NCs first Senior Defense Counsel for military personnel. He developed, staffed and managed the first military Trial Defense Service (TDS) office that served over 12,000 NC soldiers/airmen.
He presided over Magistrate’s Civil Court for 10 of his 12 years as a District Court Magistrate. In 2012, he was appointed a Resident Superior Court Judge for District 22A by NC Gov Beverly Perdue. In 2012 he returned to private practice and was subsequently appointed by NC Gov Roy Cooper as a Commissioner to the NC Veteran Affairs Commission. Alex is also a Certified Superior Court Mediator and a selected District Court Arbitrator. He is a recipient of the Old North State Award and was named Boss of the Year in 1996, by the Legal Secretaries of Iredell County.
He is a member of the Iredell County, North Carolina and American Bar Associations. He is a Master Mason and a life member of the VFW, BPOE and NRA.
