Getting a DUI for the first time could either feel like less of a big deal than it actually is, or it might feel like the end of the world depending on a person’s circumstances and personality.
It is important to understand the true impact of a DUI on a person’s record in order to know how to appropriately react to it while moving forward.
College career impacts
The College Investor talks about the impact a DUI can have on schooling. Though many colleges will not outright ban a person from attending or expel them due to a DUI, it does lower the chances of getting into schools – especially highly competitive ones.
On top of that, many colleges will eliminate the financial aid they give to a student with a DUI. This could potentially price someone out of attendance.
Job impacts
Of course, a DUI can also have an impact on job careers. Plenty of jobs do not hire people with a DUI on record. This includes jobs that require a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or need the employee to do a lot of driving on company time. It also includes almost every government position and positions that involve children, such as daycare employees or teachers.
Housing impacts
Finally, it could even change where a person can live. Sometimes, landlords do not look through a person’s record thoroughly during the application process. They may simply see that a person has a misdemeanor or felony on their record and not look further into it, approving another person with a clean record instead.
These impacts are all life altering and this is why a DUI charge should get taken seriously from the start.
